IEEE NAP 2026 Excursion through Montenegro
This carefully designed six-hour excursion introduces conference participants to some of the most significant historical, cultural and natural landmarks of Montenegro. From the Adriatic coast and the former royal capital to the country’s national symbol on Mount Lovcen and the UNESCO-listed town of Kotor, the tour presents a concise overview of Montenegro’s identity, heritage and landscape.
1. Budva (starting point)
Budva is one of the oldest urban settlements on the Adriatic, with a history stretching back more than two millennia. Its fortified Old Town reflects centuries of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian influence. Today, Budva is Montenegro’s leading tourist destination and an important symbol of the country’s connection with the Mediterranean. The combination of historic architecture, coastal scenery and vibrant cultural life makes Budva an ideal starting point for discovering Montenegro.
2. Cetinje and the National Museum of Montenegro
Often described as the historical and cultural heart of Montenegro, Cetinje served as the royal capital and political centre of the country for centuries. The National Museum preserves valuable collections related to the Montenegrin monarchy, statehood, art and spirituality. A visit to Cetinje provides insight into the formation of modern Montenegro and the traditions that helped preserve national identity during challenging periods of history.
3. Lovcen Mausoleum
Lovcen National Park occupies a special place in Montenegrin history and collective memory. At its summit stands the Mausoleum of Petar II Petrovic-Njegos, Montenegro’s most celebrated ruler, philosopher and poet. The monument is considered one of the country’s most important national landmarks. Beyond its cultural significance, the location offers magnificent panoramic views of mountains, the Adriatic coast and the Bay of Kotor.
4. Kotor Bay Viewpoint
The viewpoint above Kotor reveals one of the most recognizable landscapes in Southeast Europe. The Bay of Kotor is famous for its dramatic geography, where steep mountains meet the sea to create an extraordinary natural setting. This panoramic stop provides an excellent opportunity to appreciate the unique relationship between Montenegro’s natural environment and its centuries-old coastal settlements.
5. Kotor Old Town
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kotor represents one of the best-preserved medieval urban centres in the Adriatic region. Its fortifications, squares, churches and narrow stone streets reflect a rich maritime tradition and centuries of cultural exchange. Kotor has long connected Montenegro with international trade and navigation, making it both a historic treasure and one of the country’s most important cultural destinations today.
